"Gurren Lagann" is a Japanese anime series that ran for 27 episodes in 2007. "Gurren Lagann" is set in the future, a period when human beings are forced to go ever further underground to insulate themselves from constant earthquakes.
People live in secluded subterranean villages, 1e such village, Giha, is the hearth of Simon, a skilled teenage "digger" (person who labors at the procedure of taking the village increasingly downward) who is unpopular with many of his neighbors. Simon meets another miner, a fiery, egotistical youth named Kamina, who desires to emerge to the topside of the planet.
One day when working, Simon discovers a huge, bizarre mask. Shortly thereafter, the village is attacked by a mecha (a "mecha" is a class of large walking vehicle sometimes found in science fiction stories and comics). Simon discovers that, with a special device he unearthed previously, he can power the large visage he spotted; in this machine he defeats the robot and digs through to the ground of the planet. With him are Kamina and Yoko, a warrior he met who fearlessly tried to battle the Beastmen. This, however, is just the beginning of the story, which extenfs with the adventures of Simon, Kamina, and Yoko on the surface, where they face tons more mechas.
"Gurren Lagann" also shows a fascinating idea centered upon "spirals" and "anti spirals" that adds a deeper layer of cerebral perspective to the exciting story.
"Gurren Lagann" has evolved to some different media following its triumph, including some computer games, two animated movies, and a drawn comic series.
